Your ovulatory phase is like inner summer. Your energy is bright and outgoing, making it a great time to go on a first date or catch up with your loved ones. This is the time to schedule fun and social activities.

With the peak in hormones (estrogen and testosterone), comes a sense of inner strength, will power and confidence. You will be able to handle criticism with a light heart, adjust and move on effortlessly.

Hormone focus

Follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH) signaled by the hypothalamus, the main hormone control center in the brain, stimulates the growth of 6 – 8 follicles to grow before ovulation. The healthiest follicle which contains an egg is chosen and luteinizing hormones (LH) also sent from the hypothalamus, stimulates the follicle to release the egg at ovulation.

The swelling of the follicle takes a few hours, but ovulation where the egg is released only takes a few seconds. Some women can feel the egg released at ovulation, which is called Mittelschmerz or ‘middle pain’, which occurs mid way through the cycle. This feels like a sharp pain or cramp on the side abdomen where the ovary is releasing the egg. This should not be an intense pain that requires medical attention.

Your fertile window can however be between 3-6 days, because this is how long sperm can survive inside the female body to fertilise the egg.

During the ovulatory phase estrogen and testosterone levels peak.

Fertility Awareness Method: Signs of your fertile window

The main purpose of the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) is to confirm ovulation and determine the relative fertility window where pregnancy is most likely. If you are currently on the pill, you will unfortunately not be able to use this method, as you do not ovulate, but give it a try when you go off it when you’re ready.

Use these three parameters to determine your fertile window:

  • Basal body temperature
  • Cervical mucus with an egg white consistency
  • Cervical position

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What if I feel irritated during my ovulatory phase?

A:  Even though you’re in your ‘inner summer’, this can definitely happen if you are sensitive to the peak of estrogen during this time of ovulation.

You can help support your body to remove excess estrogen by eating a serving of cruciferous veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower or cabbage with every meal to help your liver break down and remove estrogen 🥦🥦🥦

Stay kind to yourself, you are doing great. It’s amazing that you are so in tune with you cycle emotions 🎉
